Michael Green on the Trump Trip and US-Asia Relations

November 10, 2017 7:00 AM

Michael Green (senior vice president for Asia and Japan Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies) has written a truly remarkable book on US-East Asia relations: By More Than Providence: Grand Strategy and American Power in the Asia Pacific Since 1783. As the title suggests, Mike takes a long view of US grand strategy, honing in on persistent tensions. How far forward is forward enough? What do we do about trade and human rights? And perhaps the most central theme, should we focus primarily on getting relations with China right or rely on an ultimately maritime or Mahanian strategy of offshore balancing?

While here, I had the pleasure of sitting down to talk about Trump’s Asia trip in the light of this longer history. While taped before the Korea speech, Green’s wisdom and experience about the wider regional implications are on full display.

The conversation starts at 2:50 minutes in.
