The US Trade Agenda
At a Peterson Institute for International Economics meeting held May 6, 2008, United States Trade Representative Susan Schwab discussed progress made on trade over the past year and the prospects for the Administration's trade agenda for 2008. Her remarks come nearly a year after the historic agreement of May 10, 2007, between the Administration and the Congress. That compact paved the way for passage of the free trade agreement between the United States and Peru but failed to avoid the recent disagreement on Colombia.
Schwab became US Trade Representative in April 2006 after previously serving as Deputy USTR. She was formerly dean of the University of Maryland School of Public Policy, director of corporate business development at Motorola, assistant secretary of commerce and director general of the US and Foreign Commercial Service, and a trade policy specialist and legislative director for Senator John Danforth.
